Testimony from Barbara Freese

The Lord says in Romans 8 verse 28 ‘And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are called according to His purpose.’
On the 20th July 2012 after having a biopsy and ultra sound I was diagnosed with 2 different types of cancer in the lymph glands and breast, already in the 3rd stage and if left untreated with 6 months to live.

Our lives stood still since this was totally unexpected as I had just been to a specialist for a check up!!  Was the Lord going to take me home?  Many thoughts rush through ones mind.  From the beginning I had peace in my heart and said “Lord, my times are in your hands.”  The Lord says in 1 Peter 5 verse 7 ‘Casting all your care upon Him, for He careth for you’. This was a great comfort to me as I gave my problem to the Lord.
Many prayed and even fasted.  How wonderful it is to belong to the family of God and as priest going before our living God on behalf of one another. We knew the grace of God and were comforted.
Before chemo started on the 28th August 2012 a bone scan together with a CT scan was done.  A spot on the lung was of concern to the oncologist.  A team of 12 specialists examined my case and thanks to the Lord were guided with every decision that had to be made.
I had 6 chemo treatments over 18 weeks. Unpleasant side effects but doable!!  Rupert’s side effect was to hang up the washing!!! I saw a new way of hanging up a shirt – from one side of the line to the other!!!!
Then came the big day on the 3rd January, 2013 when a mammogram, ultra sound and CT scan were done to see what the cancer was doing.  On that day I felt like I was going to write an exam, you know that nervy feeling, then at 1:30pm to hear the verdict.
The cancer has gone we heard!!!! No trace of it!!!  The spot on the lung was of no concern. How mercifully kind the Lord our God has been towards us. We give praise and thanks to our God.
The journey continues with a bilateral mastectomy on the 22nd January followed by 6 weeks of radiation.  Reconstruction will take place in 6 months time.  Also, intravenous treatment, called Herceptin, will continue for one year at 3 week intervals to ensure the cancer does not return.
Thank you for all your love, care and faithfully praying for us. We pray that the Lord will bless each one of you in a special way.
Together in Jesus,
Barbara Freese

Malawi Mission November 2012

A DAY AND A BIT IN THE LIFE OF A MISSIONARY.
Rupert wakes up at 5-45 and leaves the farm (he is in Natal) at 6-30 for an easy drive to King Shaka Airport for a flight at 8-50.

The easy one hour drive turns into a nightmare following a crash on the freeway!

Arriving at the airport at 8-20 he still has the hire car to return and he gets to the check-in desk at 8-30 only to be told that the flight is closed. As this was his only chance of connecting with the flight to Malawi from Johannesburg some prayer and a heavy dose of pleading yielded the desired seat on the plane.
Arriving in Johannesburghe was met by Alex and Peter and the trio booked in for the flight to Lilongwe. Having completed all the procedures we moved to passport control at which point we checked our boarding passes only to find we had been booked to Blantyreinstead of Lilongweso back to the check-in desk. Don’t worry the boarding passes are okay it is the system we were reliably informed.
The plane was scheduled to take us to Lilongwevia Blantyre in the end it left an hour late and took us vie Lusakawith no explanation. This is Africa relax and get used to it.
At Lilongwewe were met at the airport by our hire car and driver. We left for the town centre to drop off the driver and collect our two faithful brothers in Christ Fredson and Macnell. We eventually left Lilongweat 18-30 for a 480 km journey through deepest darkest Africa to Kazuni Lake. No problem we were travelling on a national road and the GPS was forecasting that we would arrive at 23-30. With Rupert driving we could even get there at 22-00. Little did we know!
Lots of traffic and people and bikes on the road. Normal traffic rules are only loosely applied. The cyclist with a passenger with a full roll of carpet on his head. The cyclist with a bench tied crosswise to the back of his bike. The cyclist with a two meter stack of firewood. The bucky with no lights but no problem they had tied a torch to the bonnet and this on a national road equivalent to our freeways.
First big problem no diesel in Malawi or no honest diesel there is some black market stuff available. Second problem the engine warning light had come on. We were just over halfway and it was 22-00. We managed to buy diesel from a friend of the garage attendant at 30% over the usual rate. Checked the oil no problem.
The people at the garage were amazed that we were proceeding to Kazuni at that time of night we were surprised as it was only 150 km further we had not realised that the national road became a dirt road after this and a very poor African road only fit for 4×4 travel. 20 km Out of the town and the bucky started to slow down and the engine light stayed on. We figured that it might have been dirty diesel put in before we got the car.
We soldiered on getting slower and slower until in the end we were doing 40 km an hour. We got to a bridge just outside Kazuni at 2-00 am! Drove onto the bridge slowly and the front wheels fell through the timbers. Managed to back off the bridge. See photos.

Remember when looking at the photos that we were crossing in the dead of night with only a torch and a couple of hundred mosquitoes to assist.

After some pretty deft reconstruction work by our resident civil engineer we managed to get across not one but two of these bridges a feat that even Bruce Willis would have been proud of.

We arrived at the gates to the Big 5 game park where we were staying at 02-30. Gates were shut- obviously. Imagine arriving at the Kruger Parkgates at 2-30 in the morning! What were we to do? Remember this is Africa so we got out of the car and pushed the unlocked gates open and motored in.

We drove around for some fifteen minutes looking for signs of our accommodation before we were eventually stopped by a chap with an AK47 standing in the middle of the road. What to do remember this is Africa so we stick our heads and bark “where is our accommodation.”
By three we were tucked up in bed under mosquito nets after a quick Portuguese shower (no water in the main shower). We were serenaded to sleep by a herd of hippos who sounded as if they were right outside the front door of our chalets- chalet is a very generous term for the standard of accommodation!

Woke up at 7-00 the next morning to superb view across Lake Kazuni. Before we left at 10-00 we had seen impala herd, kudu cows, 20 hippos, warthog family, pelicans, storks, four kudu bulls and three separate elephant sighting’s the last one being a herd of about 70 certainly the largest it has been my privilege to see. It is tough in Africa!

The two gentlemen that we had arranged to meet from the Kazuni Church Readson and Frank arrived at the park at 9-00 and we enjoyed an hour of getting to know each other sharing our vision for the ministry of Christ with no bishop’s vicars or pastors. This is at odds with the often held view in Malawiwhen visiting “white” people are seen as purveyors of gifts. When we asked Readson what he wanted from us he replied bible, hymn books and plastic for the roof Christ was not mentioned. We quoted from Acts 3, 1-11.

How Readson got hold of us is a story in itself. Five years earlier he had been in Blantyrewhen a friend of his who was in the Central African Assemblies had said that if you are ever in need of a man of God then phone Rupert on this number. Readson had since left Blantyreand proceeded to make his home some 800 km further north.

On arriving there he found no church so he decided to start his own. His ministry was so successful that he was joined by four other churches. He had now got to the point in his ministry where the Lord prompted him to look for help. How he had managed to keep Rupert’s number and then to find it after five years only the Lord knows. So he phoned Rupert and asked for help. We must remember that the nearest Central African church was in Blantyre 800 km to the South.
So what does Rupert do? Being the faithful servant that he is he says no problem I will put a team together and we will fly from Cape Town to Lilongwe and we will get two brothers from Blantyre to catch a bus up to Lilongwe and then we will all jump into a vehicle and drive for 480 km to come and see you.
We had also realised at this stage that our 4×4 with a top speed of now 30 km per hour due to the blocked fuel filter was not going to get us back to Lilongwe. We were faced with challenging telecoms as there was no reception in the park and it was essential that we got a new vehicle for us to be able to meet our already tight schedule and get back to the Convention in Blantyre on time for our planned ministry there.
What I have pictured here is a one day snapshot the wildlife was an unexpected blessing. We rarely get fun like that! The hassles are a daily event. The real blessing is being allowed to preach the gospel to people and to see a response as they accept Jesus into their lives and then grow in their knowledge of the Lord. Despite all the hassles when Alex and I returned to SA we both found that we battled to settle down and adjust to what we would euphemistically call normal life as our spirits were at peace in Malawi.
A SECOND DAY IN THE LIFE OF A MISSIONARY

I was woken up at 06h00 by Godwin (the cook) wanting the food for breakfast with me having spent a miserable night with four mosquitoes that flew through the holes in the mosquito net. Still no water in the shower.

But it is a glorious day thank the Lord. Drove to the Chilombo Fellowship for a 09h00 start. (The hire company had driven a new 4×4 the 530 km  up to us with a mechanic to strip out the whole fuel system on the old 4×4 and then drive it back.)

A single song (that is very unusual in itself in Africa but they were keen to get to the ministry after the ministry the day before and we were on a very strict timetable) and then into ministry on John 3- you need to make a decision to come to Jesus and be born again and 70 people do so by 10h00. We had been ministering and sharing all the day before as the Lord prepared the ground for His seeds to be planted.
Set off from Chilombo for the 530 km drive to Lilongwe. We do not like leaving any of the fellowships in a hurry but in this case we needed to catch the 16h50 flight from Lilongwe to Blantyre.
We drove halfway looking for diesel with no luck. Malawi had run out of diesel. This is a normal occurrence due to the shortage they have with foreign currency. We were running very tight for time with our GPS showing that we would arrive at the airport 25 minutes before the flight. The only way we could get diesel however was by turning off the road and travelling 15 km in the wrong direction to where we knew we could get black market diesel.
This delayed us by 40 minutes and the GPS showed an arrival time at the airport 15 minutes after the plane was due to leave. Rupert switched to turbo drive and we all started praying. We overtook a large truck doing 120 km s an hour and he started swerving to the right forcing us onto the dirt at the side of the road which would have been fine apart from the donga that we were going to hit. Some superb driving by Rupert and we are certain the helping hand of the Lord and we survived it.
Despite all the crazy driving the GPS said that we would only arrive at the airport as the plane was taking off and we still had to return the hire car. We had to be in Blantyrethat night as we were ministering at the Malawi Convention the following day.
What to do. Most important thing continue to pray! We then phoned the hire company and asked them to phone the airport to delay the plane. Impossible- to delay a national carrier only the President can do that but we do not realise the awesome power of the Lord.

We arrived at the airport ten minutes before the plane was due to leave left the car keys with the ticket clerk and boarded the bus which had been held waiting for our arrival to take us to the plane to take us to Blantyre-thank you Lord! But please never a drive like that again.

On arrival in Blantyrewe took Fredson and Macnell our two translators to the church. They had phoned their friends at the church two hours earlier to tell them where we were which was a town about 600 km from Blantyre so they could not believe it when they arrived. They kept asking how and they replied the Lord.

The full story of the flight was only explained the following day to a rapturous reception as nobody there had ever flown before as these are mainly subsistence farmers from the rural areas to whom flights are just dreams.

We left for our own accommodation which was in a cottage in the grounds of one of the original colonial houses of Blantyre owned by the McGrath’s. A huge thank you to them for the wonderful cottage which was a real privilege after the privation of our accommodation in the North.

The three of us sat back on the stoep and cried in joy and in thanks at the glory and the power of the Lord – we serve an awesome God! I cannot explain the joy and love felt by the three of us in that time of prayer and worship. After all we had been through nobody ever got stressed as we knew that the Lord was in control all the time because we loved Him and we were about His work!

If this Blog has created a spark inside you and you are interested in serving the Lord as part of a mission team please contact Rupert Freese on 083 799 5522. Mission teams normally leave Durban and Johannesburg twice a year in 4×4 convoys to minister the wonderful word of the Lord to communities in Mozambique and Malawi. We are hoping to go up more often and possibly do fly-in’s as on this trip, it depends on the number of volunteers.

Family Camp Testimony

It’s already three weeks ago & I don’t think there is a day that goes by when some part of the Camp doesn’t come to mind. Was blessed to be under ministry of all the speakers and never ceased to be amazed at how God ministers to us on a particular subject.

Reconciliation was particularly pertinent, not only the reconciliation between God & man through our Saviour Jesus Christ but also one to another to keep short accounts, make right whilst you still can & to be obedient to the prompting of the Holy Ghost.

Thank You Lord for giving us the words, strength & courage to do so. Thank you all for making it such a special weekend, new friends made, fellowship shared, food fit for kings &special chalet mates!

Thank you Sean for inviting us & thank you Rupert & Sean for taking time out to come and minister to us on Thursday evenings.Communication time thought provoking.

” Wat Maak Vir Gansbaai Lekker?”

I had the opportunity to go with Sean to Gansbaai on Tuesday, what an awesome trip, very long trip though, but amazing. Its amazing to see everything that our GOD has made so in detail, flowers, the whales, birds etc.by the way it  was the first time ever that I saw a whale in real life.

Sean and I had an awesome time having fellowship around the word.when we arrived in Gansbaai we were welcomed by a group of believers.Sean asked me to give my testimony how I got saved.

I didn’t know where to start and what to say, but I got up and gave it anyway.(It was my first time that I gave my testimony in front of people)thank you LORD for giving me that opportunity.

There is a song(wat maak vir Gansbaai lekker)I can tell you now that it is our Lord JESUS in the believers that makes Gansbaai lekker. Praise GOD for all the Gansbaai folks.GOD Bless.

Family Camp Testimony

What a lovely time I had at the camp with my darling family Pat and Chris!

There were so many highlights but I think for me, it was when Chris spoke of his grandson, Josh sitting on his lap and telling him that he, Josh, loved Chris’s smell….and how we as God’s children can love God’s smell and that we can radiate His fragrance…..

Chris’s face took on a softness and sweetness when he told the story. What joy to bring that look from God when He talks about me!!!
Jean Cass.

Yet another weekend filled with the presence and power of God’s word!
A timely message imparting and unfolding the ministry of reconciliation. Being brought back into Jesus Christ – drinking from Him and being saturated with His Spirit of love and reconciliation, melting us into a unified force with God.

Not as a loose agent, but people of purpose and direction – bringing God and man together. Having a real experience of Him, we have shared the incredible joy that the abundant life in Christ offers us!.
Thanking all who contributed in bringing the Word of God in a simplistic, but powerful way!

Lord bless.
Annatjie Marais

I must admit that I have never been together with such a group of anointed men and all such gifted speakers.  It made me feel safe and in Gods order and plan. Just the fact that each speaker blessed us so and each subject just seemed to build on the last message…amazing!
I have never experienced the presence of God as I did at our last communion together – I was truly blessed.
Thank you one and all for including me so readily into your family and for the loving atmosphere that each person contributed to – and lastly (and definitely not the least important!!) thank you for the most amazing meals we enjoyed.  Food fit for royalty!  Many thanks, and blessings to all those involved with the organization that went into making the camp such a life experience!

Family Camp 2012

Family Camp is one of those wonderful opportunities for renewing old friendships and building new relationships in the Lord Jesus.
We were all excited by the abundant evidence of the blessing the Lord has visited on the work in the Western Capesince our last Camp.
It was good to see how we have all grown in the Lord together and are all gripped by His vision for the work which He is doing, from the Southern Suburbs to the Northern Suburbs, Somerset West, Gansbaai and Langebaan.
The weekend was a perfect mixture of rich ministry and deep fellowship punctuated by the joy of a baptism in the large and very cold swimming pool.

De Hollandsche Molen is situated just outside beautiful Franschhoek and provides a wonderful setting for a time together with Jesus.

As always the Lord spoke powerfully to each individual heart by the Holy Ghost challenging us according to our need.
The call went out from the first meeting to come and dine, cross the bridge into the joy of a full satisfying relationship with Jesus.
The Holy Ghost demonstrated in a very visual and practical manner how the Lord Jesus is the perfect and only Mediator between God and Man.
The love of God was in such evidence as He urged us to be reconciled to Him committing unto us the ministry of reconciliation.
Having been urged to come and dine we were asked to come and drink of Jesus the living water, a river that flows abundantly, unconstrained and full of Life.
We were asked to wade into Him up to our ankles, then to the knees, the loins and finally to swim.
Lord Jesus it is all about you!
More precious moments from the weekend:

Malawi Bible School July 2012

Brethren from all over Malawiand a contingent from Mozambiquegathered together for the very first Malawi Bible School, held over 5 days in a hall the brethren had built themselves. The concept and vision for this Bible School originated in the hearts of the Malawibelievers and found expression as they labored together to acquire and clear the land, fashion and fire the bricks and ultimately erect the building. Proof of this shared vision was evident as brethren traveled great distances at their own cost to be a part of what God is doing in Malawi.

The Bible School’s objective is to gather in one place at one time as many of the brethren who have a care for the work as is possible. Teaching them in a more structured fashion, allowing for greater depth in terms of doctrine with discussion and input from the students. These brethren will then take what they have learned and preach and teach the same in their villages and outreaches.
To help this process and to more fully reinforce the doctrine a laptop computer was presented to the brethren. The computer contained the video recordings of the 5 days of ministry, a years worth of True Light Course and over 520 hours of ministry audio files.
This we pray will become a powerful tool as brethren avail themselves of the opportunity to hear and share this wealth of teaching.
We praise God for the stability He has brought to the Malawi work and the brethren He is raising to care for His sheep. There are a number of young brethren who show great promise and are gripped with the same vision and have committed themselves to the work.
The Lord Jesus is building His Church and has offered us the inconceivable privilege to become a part of His great purpose as fellow laborers with Him!

True Light Testimony

I was in the True light course in Welgemoed on a Monday night with Rupert.
The Lord put me there for exactly a year and I have gone back to visit now and then since I left in end of May.

I read this testimony to the group on the evening I said good bye.

Rupert and Barbara asked me to send you this letter, can you post it on the blog please.

‘Dear Rupert, Franscois and every other member of this group.

A year ago I pitched here as a “real mess” ! Confused, sad, angry at God and myself.
Today almost a year later I feel like a new confident woman with my foundation in Christ and his righteousness.

God has walked an amazing journey with me in one year…cause I was willing to deal with myself.
Myself, me and I was too important to me!

A fear of rejection, getting hurt and being left ruled my emotions, thoughts and actions, in such a manner that I pushed away what and whom I so badly wanted.
I some time still fall. But then I realise through God’s grace: “ I know I am not where I am supposed to be, but thank goodness I am not where I used to be.”

Only God can heal from the inside out. And we have to give our fears over to him constantly.

I want to share a very well known verse in the Bible – but it’s one of those that is just so comforting:
“Proverbs 3:5-6 Trust in the Lord with ALL your heart and lean not on your own understanding, in all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.”

I love how God is using me now to support others through advice, witnessing and even compassion to the sick and poor!

At last I am content at being 31 and single, but am FREE in my spirit!

I want to thank every one of you for your loving eyes, advice and patience with me – Rupert I enjoyed every “little argument or differ in meaning”
You handled me well ! :o)

It was such a privilege to be here with my mom and sister, sorry that we were always late!!

Tonight I am saying goodbye for now.
God led me back to Shofar Church in Stellenbosch since the beginning of this year. I am doing bible school on Tuesday evenings and want to get involved in a small group cell there with young working adults on Wednesdays.

This group taught me how important the basic foundation is of growing up with “milk” in the Word.

I wish you all just the best according to God’s plan….

Blessings

Antoinettte”

Western Cape Ladies’ Camp 18 – 20 May 2012, De Hollandse Meulen, Paarl

We, the Western Capeladies, gathered from various areas, want with one loud voice of praise, to give honour and glory to God Almighty, the Creator of the Way, the Author of the Truth and the Evidence of the Life for a wonderful weekend away (who cares if it was cold and rainy!).

Praises too ring to God for the vessels used over the weekend, Peter Hawyes (and Mary) and Rupert Freese (and Barbara). We thank God too for the lovely spirit of readiness and openness in each lady’s heart!
What a privilege –  in a world, where women either raise themselves up, are exploited for their bodies and looks, are abused by men or have no rights and worth – to hear from the heart of God regarding His thoughts and plans for women!  “He has made everything beautiful in His time” – the verse at the beginning of the weekend to catch our interest.
And catch our interest….. thatthe Lord did by the power of His Word and the truth contained in it. There were moments of wonder and relief as it was confirmed in our hearts that God has a plan and purpose for this world, through the ages unfolding His preparing of us for Eternity – either in Heaven or hell!

How we delighted in the knowledge that what He does has order and a pattern! There were moments when we were alert, hearing of Lucifer’s clever plan to deceive us, but God’s way out – a wisdom from His heart.
There were moments of quiet as in our spirits we understood that submission is the key! Submitting ourselves to men, to our husbands, to the oversight, to the ministries brought by the brethren is submitting to God’s order and authority, yielding our will to His – yet yielding not only our will to Him, but also our bodies and our minds. How we rejoiced as again we were encouraged that it is the law of the Spirit of Life in Christ Jesus that lives in us and enables us!

Excitement filled our hearts as we understood that we are the Bride of Christ, being prepared for our wonderful Bridegroom in the Body of Christ! We heard how this Body, the Church, is part of the power structure of God against which the gated of hell shall not prevail!
And then there were moments of humility as we realized our privilege of speaking, speaking as helpmeets, speaking to establish, nurture and confirm that seed of the Word of God! We truly rejoiced in God’s purpose for us as women!

We had wonderful times of praise and worship, we had many a good laugh and times of fellowship. We enjoyed being well fed in the flesh (a big thank you, Tim and Kathy) and though the weekend is sadly over, we trust God to keep each word alive in our hearts!

Boereworse Rolls & Fellowship

Not much will tempt brethren out of bed too early on a Saturday morning. Boereworse Rolls for breakfast however seem to be one thing that can. The other is hearty fellowship around the Lord Jesus.
The need to be of one accord and full of the Holy Ghost was impressed upon our hearts. There is work to be done and men who can do the work are in short supply. The call is for each of us to become those that are committed to the Lord Jesus and to His work, fruitful and useful so that we see men and women plucked from the fire, established on the foundation and growing to full maturity in Him. This can only be accomplished if we are all of one accord and full of the Holy Ghost.
